Phil Schmid

Director of Commercialization

Philip Schmid leads commercialization strategy at NBRR, working with members on go-to-market planning, pricing, and investment readiness, and bringing in private capital.

Prior to NBRR, Phil was a founding member of Up.Labs, a corporate venture studio based in Santa Monica, CA. Over his three years there, he partnered with Porsche to ideate, build, and launch two startups per contract year, working as the business & growth resource on three-person venture teams alongside a product manager and an engineer. In this role, he owned product positioning, financial modeling, customer segmentation and acquisition, and early customer relationships, as well as raising seed capital.

Over his career, Phil has held senior strategy and finance roles at TrueCar and BCG Digital Ventures, where he helped grow the venture-creation firm’s global revenue roughly 180%, as well as at Walt Disney Studios and Latham & Watkins. Most recently, Phil founded East Branch Advisory, through which he has worked on a variety of entrepreneurial and strategic projects for founder-led companies, including Tracy Anderson Method and Awkward Family Photos. Phil holds an M.B.A. from UCLA Anderson School of Management and a B.A. in Economics from Boston University.

Phil grew up working summers on his grandparents’ farm in nearby Westport, Massachusetts, an experience that inspired his interest in complex technologies that simplify everyday life and support a more sustainable planet. An avid surfer, he geeks out on board and fin design, and apologizes in advance for being unavailable when a good swell hits.
