History. Innovation. Social Impact

New Bedford, MA

New Bedford was once one of the richest ports in the world, founded by Quaker patricians upon a flourishing global whaling industry, which brought people from all over the world to its shores, and became fertile ground for social reform movements and civil rights.

From whaling to textiles to commercial fishing, New Bedford has reinvented itself throughout its rich history. However, since the great depression New Bedford has struggled to regain its prominent place in the global economy.

New Bedford, like most post-industrial cities, has been buffeted by winds of global economic change and depleted by the flight of talent and capital in a handful of large metropolitan areas, causing the economic base to shrink and become less diverse and dynamic.

We at NBRR believe now is the time for another renaissance fueled by frontier technologies, which are driving the 4th industrial revolution. The use of robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and data-driven technologies can diversify the city’s commercial and industrial base, and catapult New Bedford to a place of global economic consequence, driven by data, real-world technological application, and creative class innovation.

New Bedford is a prime location for regeneration with a deep water port well-positioned to foster innovation in blue tech, renewable energy, and robotics.

Sectors We Serve

Robotics

The field of robotics is changing rapidly.  From Industrial robotics to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), we provide opportunities to expand research into new territories.

Blue Tech

Emerging water technologies are fast becoming a new frontier for exploration. Our location in New Bedford, MA provides access to a deep sea port and a pathway to research technologies related to maritime innovation.

Clean Energy

Environmental diligence is needed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and the effects of global warming. We work with our partners to conduct novel clean energy research.

Data Science & Data Visualization

Over 2.5 Quintillion (2.5 million trillion) bytes of data are created every day, and 90 percent of that data has been created in the last two years. Data Science and Data Visualization provides a way to make meaning from this data deluge.

Gaming | VR | XR

The future of interfaces will go beyond the flat 2D screens of our computers. Research is quickly shifting to tele-presence devices and experience design. Gaming will be instrumental in this transformation.

AI & Machine Learning

From deep learning to the experimental effects of GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks), we’re interesting in big questions and research related to explainability, synthetic data, and the future of AI.

Technologies

Our Technology Suite

We are committed to serving the community through advanced technologies. These are a few of the resources we bring during our engagements with the community: Robotics & AI, Data Science/Data Visualization, Vision/ VR/ Gaming, IoT Sensing, Laser cutting/ Etching, CNC, and 3D printing technologies.
